TRAVEL WITHOUT HETTY

TROMSØ TO STAMSUND
NO FISH PLEASE
After lunch….
Beef and mushroom slow cooked with potato and veg .. Second helping to build up to tonight’s fish ..which I won’t have .. No more fish !!!
We have been avoiding excursions as the cost is mind blowing £150 each for four hour coach trip on the island of Hinnøya from Harstad to Shortland… ok you say .. you won’t do this again !! But .. I says TRAVELS OF HETTY can come back in summer .. perhaps !
Leaving Harstad a medieval church at Trondenes was pointed out on the shore and on Risøyrenna Dredged channel link a bit of a tight fit for this size of vessel but an interesting manoeuvre and on to Sortland to pick up the coach trip passengers
More later ..and perhaps photos will upload ..

GLORIOUS SUNSET
                          GLORIOUS SUNSET

Another evening meal … Fish and more fish ..When we started off on this voyage of discovery we liked fish …After day 8 we’re fished out ..We had Roast Reindeer for a change and salted lamb but all with a fish starter ..or a fish lunch ..Breakfast is easy but early 7am till 9.30 ..I have cereal yoghurt and fruit if I don’t have a fry up ..lunch from 12 till 1.30 is again easy ..Smorgborg (spell check says NO but no suggestion as to how to spell it) …the fish is here but a better choice as in King crab smoked salmon with salad ..so thats not bad …but by supper time which is at 6.30 Fish is the last thing I want ..Today I’ve asked the chef for a starter of NOT fish as the main is fish ..so we will see hat he comes up with (RANT OVER)

The scenery is magnificent ..Mountainous islands covered in snow

p1030604 ..tiny hamlets ..colourful but remote

p1030673-2Sunsets to die for ..Then their is an announcement “The Northern Lights are on the forward bow”..Coats on ..Its freezing ..-6C John says with the wind chill factor added ..I manage a couple of hours but had to defrost with a large brandy in a hot chocolate ..John went out again ..too cold for me ..

p1030799

I took hundreds of shots .. most had a wobble on with the engines of the boat drumming away under foot … me shivering  and the long exposure but here is a good one ..

Off for  lunch now .. MORE FISH

Our thoughts on Kirkenes

img_1415

Photo speaks volumes

  • Kirkenes is situated 10 km from the Russian border.. The walk into town with ice under foot took 20 mins  with me ..Susan ..slipping and sliding all over the place .. It’s dull and cold and there’s nothing to see in town just a few shops and  boarded up sad looking buildings ..On our way back which again took 20 mins Russian boats .. we think crabbers are moored .. Again looking worst for wear and in need of a good paint job ..

TRAVELS WITHOUT HETTY

LATE EVENING 1st NOVEMBER

This evening we passed The Finnjerka or Finn Church …A unique rock formation name for its likeness to a church img_1408In the old days the Samis ( The people of the North Cape) believed all things had a soul.. and treated these rocks and cliffs with reverence and respect ..The characteristic shape meant it serves as a landmark for fishing people and it is a img_1407haven in rough weather and in the evening is lit up  to show the way into the bay called Kjøllfjord where they seek refuge and shelter.                                       In the late evening the Northerm Lights were dancing but we didn’t see em as by midnight we were in bed ..More to follow ..

TROMSØ
Late breakfast after a long sleep..Must have been too much excitement playing Rummikub
or perhaps a shared bottle of Burgandy and a beddy chocolate laced with brandy
Not a cloud in the sky .. sunshine all the way to Tromsø but put your thermals on to go out on the deck with a crisp wind blowing J says it’s about -4Cimg_1402
I’m warm enough in my Nanuke of the North coat .. gloves .. leggings under trousers .. thermal shirt under fleecy .. look rather like a telly tubby but I’m warm and cosy … Walking shoes with fleecy socks .. a snood type head band finish this outfit off .. photo to follow
Moored on the town quay in Tromsø for a walk over the bridge to the Ice Cathedral .. a steady climb of 2 miles to get over the Fiord .. very icy under foot .. and 2 miles back .. No diversion today to cold to be out long
What a structure .. like a shard of ice ..I won’t go into details but here’s a link via Wiki

Dark by 4pm
The food on board is pretty much Fish .. today’s lunch was poached salmon .. chunks of fresh cod which I had with a potato salad .. in fact I’ve been living off fish n fruit .. perfect for me !

A bumping ride from Bergen to Alesund..Wet but magical when a hintimg_1149 of sun managed to claw its way through the heavy clouds
A very light breakfast of me after the gastronomical fare of the previous evening but not for him self who tucked into a full fry up
A 15 minute stop in Alesund to for disembarking locals and now off up The Hjørundfjord
img_1191

The tender took the hikers off to the shore for their accompanied walk ..not for us today .. a very lighting lunch and just sitting watching the weather change the aspects of the snow dusted mountains
The boat hovered on it bow and stern thrusters waiting for the return of the tender with its very wet passengers then did a 180° turn .. interesting manoeuvre in such a tight spot and off we went back down the fjord to Alesund to moor on the town quay for our stroll ashore in the cold wet sleety stuff … Interesting town destroyed by fire in 1907 ish and rebuilt in an Art Nouveau style but again very wet so we didn’t hang around ..

Had supper with two lovely people from Cheshire ..Dean a retired Gentleman farmer and his companion the wonderful Pauline described as “She who must be obeyed”
Played a game with them in the coffee lounge after supper called Rummikub .. heard of it but never played before .. great fun but we certainly need practice ..
and so to bed and another rough night .. don’t think the sea could decide which way to throw us .. like being in a washing machine .. so early to bed with a hot chocolate laced with brandy.. Smuggled on board by J .. Rules about not bringing own booze on board are just there to be broken !!!!
Arrived Trondheim docked at 8-30 am and off for a route march to the countries oldest Cathedral..

img_1223Wet but not as cold as Alesund .. I sometime wish I was old enough to do the coach tour but no ! It’s Johns walking tour .. The Cathedral was worth the route march through deserted wet Saturday morning streets.. and back .. to set sail again at midday .. and a fishy lunch ..
